Dear Parents/Guardians,

As the City of Calgary continues to grow, the Calgary Board of Education (CBE) continues to prioritize keeping students closer to home, provide strong, stable learning environments that keep peers together, while working to alleviate enrolment pressures.

Beginning with the 2026-27 school year, Regular program students in Grades 7 to 9 living in Montgomery will be designated to Thomas B. Riley School. This change will bring together students from the Montgomery community with their peers into the same high school and balance enrolment amongst northwest Calgary public schools.

Thomas B. Riley School is a Jr. High School located in the community of Bowness at 3915 69 St. NW (please see attached map).

Why am I receiving this notice?

According to CBE records, you live in the Montgomery community, and your child(ren) or current school may be impacted by the designation change at Thomas B. Riley School. This notice will provide you with the information you need to know.

Who will move to Thomas B. Riley School?

Regular program students in Grades 7 to 9 living in the Montgomery community will be designated to Thomas B. Riley School, this means:

  • All new CBE registrations, including siblings, will be designated to Thomas B. Riley School.
  • Grade 6 students currently attending Terrace Road School will go to Thomas B. Riley School.
  • Grades 7 and 8 students currently at F. E. Osborne School can choose to stay at their school until finishing Grade 9, or transfer to Thomas B. Riley School. Families must inform their current principal of their decision by Friday, March 13. Failure to notify the principal of your choice, will result in your child(ren) being automatically designated to the new school.

Note: current Grade 8 students choosing to transfer to Thomas B. Riley School for Grade 9 will attend three different schools in three years.

Are there other designation changes?

Yes, the area known as Shouldice Athletic Park will be re-designated from Bowcroft School to Terrace Road School. This change does not impact any students and is intended to better align the school boundary with the Montgomery community boundary.

How do I register for school next year?

Any student new to the CBE is required to register online by visiting our New Student Registration page. Registration for the 2026-27 school year starts January 2026.

CBE students living in the Montgomery community, and are currently in:

  • Grade 6, will automatically be registered to Thomas B. Riley School. No action is required.
  • Grades 7 and 8 must inform their current principal, by Friday, March 13, 2026, of their decision to remain at F. E. Osborne School or transfer to Thomas B. Riley School

How will students get to school?

Current Grade 7 and 8 students designated for Thomas B. Riley School but choose to remain at F. E. Osborne School will continue to use Calgary Transit as their designated transportation option.

CBE students are eligible for transportation to their designated school if they live beyond the walk zone, but within the attendance area. Please note transportation for middle and junior high school students can include yellow school bus service or Calgary Transit. Please visit the CBE Busing &Transportation page for more information. Service levels and fees will be confirmed by May 2026.
