Dear Students and Parents/Guardians
Due to continued enrolment growth in Calgary, there is a need to balance enrolment between schools in northwest Calgary.
Effective for the 2025-26 school year, the following grade configuration changes will be implemented:
- Collingwood, Dalhousie, and W. O. Mitchell Schools will change from a kindergarten to Grade 5 configuration to a kindergarten to Grade 6 configuration for the Spanish Bilingual program. This will allow more Spanish Bilingual program students to attend a school closer to home.
- Senator Patrick Burns School will change from a Grade 6 to 9 configuration for the Spanish Bilingual program to a Grade 7 to 9 configuration. This will align the Spanish Bilingual and Regular programs to be the same grade configurations.
School | 2024-25 | 2025-26 and beyond |
Collingwood School (Spanish Bilingual) | Kindergarten to Grade 5 | Kindergarten to Grade 6 |
Dalhousie School (Spanish Bilingual) | Kindergarten to Grade 5 | Kindergarten to Grade 6 |
W. O. Mitchell School (Spanish Bilingual) | Kindergarten to Grade 5 | Kindergarten to Grade 6 |
Senator Patrick Burns School (Spanish Bilingual) | Grade 6 to 9 | Grade 7 to 9 |
Senator Patrick Burns School (Regular Program) | Grade 7 to 9 | Grade 7 to 9 - No Change |
Effective for the 2025-26 school year, the following designation changes will be implemented for students living in University of Calgary and University District communities:
- Grade 7 to 9 Regular program students living in the communities of University of Calgary and University District will be re-designated from F. E. Osborne School to Senator Patrick Burns School. This will align students with their cohort into their designated high school.
- All new Grade 7 to 9 regular program registrations for the 2025-26 school year and beyond will be designated to Senator Patrick Burns School.
- Current Grade 7 and 8 students attending F. E. Osborne School who will be in Grade 8 and 9 for the 2025-26 school year may remain at F.E. Osborne School until completion of Grade 9, or transfer to Senator Patrick Burns School.
- Students from these communities should inform their school principal of their choice to remain at F. E. Osborne School or transfer to Senator Patrick Burns School by Mar. 3, 2025.
- F. E. Osborne School students with siblings who will be new Grade 7 to 9 students in the 2025-26 school year may transfer to Senator Patrick Burns School to be with their siblings.
Why is this change happening?
There is available space at the elementary level to change the Spanish Bilingual program to include Grade 6. Senator Patrick Burns School offers both Regular and Spanish Bilingual programs and is projected to be over 100 per cent utilized in the coming years.
Changes are being made to balance enrolment across CBE schools to help alleviate current and anticipated enrolment pressures in Calgary. Additionally, these changes will align grade configurations and community cohorts while allowing some students to attend school closer to home.
