Youth Vaping: Can you spot the Vape?

Throughout society and schools, we have been seeing significant growth in the amount of people and youth engaging in vaping. In a study from 2021/2022 reported that 18% of youth surveyed in grades 7 – 9 said that they had tried vaping. In High School that number rose to 41% of students indicating they had tried vaping. We will be adding a section to our weekly parent email to help you have conversations with your kids about this issue. This is part of our evolving approach to targeting vaping in schools and youth that you and the students will see rolling out over the next several weeks and months. Today we would like to start with a True or False and a video to help you spot vapes that might be hiding in plain sight in your child's backpack. The good news is that we know from anti-smoking campaigns that youth were 8-% less likely to smoke if they had conversations about it’s impact by age 10. Even if your child is older, it is not to early or late to have these discussions, as the majority of youth engaged in this believe it to be completely non-harmful and need us to help them understand the risks.

Can you Spot the Vape: Alberta Health is rolling out a series of new media targeting vaping. We will be sharing these with you as they become available. Until then, this video is from a different campaign out of the US but does an excellent job of highlighting how hard it can be to spot vaping devices. They often are made to look like everyday items present in schools!

True or False -> Vape devices and fluids are regulated similarly to cigarettes?

False -> The amount of Nicotine in Vape fluid (juice) is not regulated. Cigarettes are only allowed to have 2mg of Nicotine per cigarette. Vapes are not currently regulated in this way and can have been found to contain anywhere from 2 to 24mg of Nicotine. It may also not be noted on the packaging the amount of Nicotine present! Governments are working to catch up with their regulations but are behind on this front.

FEO School Council

School council will be meeting right after the break on January 9, 2024. One of the most important ways parents/guardians and community members can make a meaningful difference for students is by participating on the school council and attending school council meetings. We encourage you to attend!
