Hello FEO Eagle Families!

The Calgary Board of Education strives to ensure that all our schools are safe and caring places for all students and staff. As a public school system, we welcome and celebrate students from diverse backgrounds, perspectives and beliefs.

At F.E. Osborne School, we have honoured and recognized our unique school community throughout the school year with events such as National Day of Truth & Reconciliation/Orange Shirt Day, German History Month, Black History Month, Pink Shirt Day, Asian History Month and Italian Heritage Month.

June is Pride Month Internationally, a time to recognize the pursuit of equality and rights for 2SLGBTQ+ individuals. The CBE reaffirms its commitment to creating safe and caring learning and work environments for 2SLGBTQ+ students and staff. At F.E Osborne School, we will recognize this occasion by continuing our work in promoting a safe, caring and inclusive learning community.

We acknowledge that each family and community have unique experiences with different recognitions and celebrations, and any commemorative activities in our schools may be perceived differently. However, classroom-based activities and lessons that promote diversity and inclusion are not subject to exemptions under the Education Act.

The Week Ahead

As we enter the final month of the academic year, from track and field to the Grade 9 Farewell Celebration, we have many exciting events happening around the school. Teachers and our admin team are also actively preparing for next year in addition to preparing for the upcoming PATs and Report Cards.

I would also like to highlight the upcoming AGM for our School Council on June 4th.  Our council is instrumental in supporting the school and spearheading many initiatives that have incredible impacts on our school community. I would encourage you to attend and have your voice help shape the upcoming year!

Grade 9 Farewell Celebrations

The FEO Grade 9 Farewell Celebration is fast approaching on June 14, 2024, from 1:30-4:30 at FEO. A dance will be held for Grade 9 students from 1:30-3:30. We invite parents to come at 3:30 to join their students for food trucks, a photo booth, and other opportunities for pictures to celebrate our Grade 9s.

School Council | June 4 @ 6:30 PM

Our Annual General Meeting (AGM) is fast approaching and will be the last School Council meeting of the year. The meeting will be held on MS Teams and the link will be shared to all parents & guardians on the morning of the meeting. Please come and share your voice at FEO as we plan for next year!

Track & Field

Our student-athletes are participating in the regional track meet today at Foothills Athletic Park. Check out our social media feeds for information and updates! Best of luck to all our athletes! Go Eagles!

Away for the Day | Mobile Phone Policy

FEO is an “Away for the Day” (AFTD) school. We believe that having phones put away in lockers, so the phone is physically off of the students, is the best practice. Studies reveal the potential for negative outcomes on academic success.

  • In a study of participants who watched a video lecture in four different cellphone conditions, those who had their phones taken away during the lecture performed the best on a test about the lecture.
  • Test scores decreased by 10.6% among students who were regularly interrupted by text messages.
  • Participants turned off their phones. While they performed memory tasks, some could keep their phone with them and some had to put it in the other room. Those who had the phone with them did significantly worse on the tasks. The attention and energy it takes to not check a phone seems to cause "brain drain."
  • 82% if parents of middle schoolers do not want their kids to use cell phones during school
